A-Type Chicken Cages for 25,000 Layers Poultry Farm in Zambia

September 17, 2026

A layer farmer in Zambia expanded his poultry business from an initial 5,000-bird project to a farm with approximately 25,000 layers. LIVI supplied three-tier A-type layer cages and scraper manure removal systems for each development stage. The final configuration was selected to match the dimensions of three poultry houses, the available power supply, the local workforce, and the farmer's investment plan.

What Is the Configuration of This 25,000-Layer Farm in Zambia?

The project was developed in two stages. For the first stage, the customer ordered an A-type chicken cage system for about 5,000 layers from us. After operating the farm for one year and gaining practical experience in flock management, he decided to expand the farm by another 20,160 bird spaces.

Project stage Poultry house Cage configuration Designed capacity Manure removal
First project 46 × 8 × 3 m 3-tier A-type cages, 120 birds per set 5,040 layers Scraper system
Expansion house 1 46 × 8 × 3 m 42 sets, 3 tiers, 120 birds per set 5,040 layers Scraper system
Expansion house 2 89 × 12 × 3 m 126 sets, 3 tiers, 120 birds per set 15,120 layers Scraper system

The expansion therefore added 168 cage sets and 20,160 bird spaces. Together with the original flock, the farm now operates at an overall scale of approximately 25,000 laying hens. Each cage set measures 1,950 × 350 × 380 mm and accommodates 120 birds.

Why Did the Farmer Continue Using A-Type Layer Cages?

Controlled investment

As a first-time poultry investor, the customer needed to keep the initial equipment cost within a conservative budget. The A-type structure provided a practical balance between bird capacity, routine management, and capital expenditure. It also allowed the farm to expand after the first production cycle instead of paying for the entire project at the beginning.

Suitable for limited electricity

The local power supply could not reliably support a fully automated cage system. The selected arrangement keeps feeding and daily inspection straightforward while using scraper manure removal for the most labor-intensive cleaning task. This reduces dependence on high electrical loads and complex equipment.

Easy daily access

The three-tier A-frame leaves clear access to the cages, feed troughs, drinker lines, and egg collection area. Workers can observe the birds, identify abnormal conditions, collect eggs, and complete maintenance without relying on specialized machinery.

How Did LIVI Design the Two Expansion Houses?

The design started with usable house width and length rather than applying one standard layout to both buildings. LIVI calculated the cage rows, number of sets, working aisles, manure channels, and end clearances separately for the 46-meter and 89-meter houses.

46 × 8 × 3 m poultry house

This house was configured with 42 sets of three-tier A-type chicken cages, providing 5,040 bird spaces. The layout uses the narrower eight-meter width efficiently while maintaining passages for feeding, egg collection, bird inspection, and scraper-system maintenance.

89 × 12 × 3 m poultry house

The larger house was configured with 126 cage sets for 15,120 layers. Its wider floor area allowed more cage rows, but the plan still reserved sufficient working aisles and service space. The long house was divided logically so workers could inspect the flock and respond to equipment issues without unnecessarily disturbing other areas.

The design did not pursue automation simply for a higher equipment specification. It focused on stable operation under the customer's actual conditions. The scraper system moves manure from beneath the cage rows, helping the workers maintain cleaner aisles and reducing the amount of manual manure handling. The modular cage arrangement also makes damaged parts easier to inspect and replace.

What Installation and After-Sales Support Did LIVI Provide for This Project?

For this Zambia poultry farm, LIVI provides online installation guidance for the customer's local workers. Our technical team explains the assembly sequence and checks key steps through photos, videos, and online calls, including cage-frame positioning, row alignment, feed-trough connections, drinking-line installation, and scraper-system adjustment.

24-hour support group: A dedicated after-sales communication group remains available during installation and later operation. When the customer sends an installation photo, operating video, or technical question, the team can identify the relevant component and provide targeted guidance. Customers who require additional support can also discuss on-site engineer service or available local installation resources with LIVI.

This project shows that poultry farm expansion does not always require full automation. When power capacity and budget are limited, a properly planned A-type layer cage system with scraper manure removal can provide a practical route from a small first investment to a larger commercial layer farm.
